The Jade Buddha for Universal Peace

Commissioned by an Australian couple and finished in December 2008, the Jade Buddha for Universal Peace has embarked on a worldwide tour from 2010 to 2011 after which it will be brought to its permanent home at the Great Stupa in Bendigo, Victoria, Australia, where the couple reside.

Vietnam starts work on biggest jade Buddha statue

A Vietnamese jewelry firm has started work on the biggest Buddha statue to date from a 35-ton block of jade, the Vietnam News Agency said.

President Nguyen Minh Triet attended a ceremony to kick off the project on Monday, along with Vietnam’s Buddhist patriarch, Thich Pho Tue, and several hundred monks.

Brief information on Jade Buddha Temple

Jade Buddha Temple was first built in 1882, but destroyed during Warring periods. The present structure was built in 1918 and located on the intersection of Anyuan and Jiangning Roads. It includes the Hall of Heavenly King, Mahavira Hall, Jade Buddha Hall, Reclining Buddha Hall,  Kwan-yin Hall, Bronze Buddha Hall, Buddhism classrooms, guest rooms, religious offices, and a dining hall for monks.

Entering the Jade Buddha Temple serves as a brief respite from the stresses modern Shanghai presents. Within the temple grounds, monks patrol in groups and chant with the assistance of instrumentation. The monks aren’t too loud, but one feels as though they could be heard from anywhere on the temple grounds. The temple itself is resplendent in shades of red and gold, striking the eye but never appearing too garish. The massive human figures within the temple appear much the same way; imposing and colorful, but demanding of respect and attention.
